These rules are meant to protect motorcyclists, as well as others that share the road. The state also has specific laws that apply only to motorcyclists. If you are under the age of 18, you are required to hold your Class 1 or 2 permit for 180 days and submit a Driver Education Certificate and Behind the Wheel Motorcycle Certificate before applying for the skills test.Motorcyclists in California must follow the same laws that apply to drivers of standard passenger vehicles. You must wear long sleeves or a jacket, pants, shoes or boots (no slippers).Present current insurance card (not applicable for moped).Present current safety inspection form (safety inspection sticker must be on motorcycle/motor scooter/moped).Once your motorcycle/moped instruction permit expires, you must wait 90 days and reapply as a new applicant.You may not renew your instruction permit unless you have attempted to take the motorcycle skills test.You must wear DOT inspected helmet, goggles.You may not operate a motorcycle/moped at night.Successfully pass rules of the road written test.Present original or certified copy of document(s) for proof of legal presence (See List of Acceptable Documents).Present identifying documents for proof of name, date of birth and social security number (See List of Acceptable Documents).Complete application for Instruction Permit / Class 1.Requirements for Moped Instruction Permit Successfully pass the rules of road written test (if you do not currently hold a Class 3 license).Successfully pass the motorcycle written test.Have a clear driving record on the National Driver Registry.Present two (2) documents for Proof of Residence Address (If your post office box is your mailing address, you must also bring in a document with your physical address listed).Present original or certified copy of document(s) for proof of legal presence.Present identifying documents for proof of name, date of birth and social security number (see List of Acceptable Documents).Complete and print application for Instruction Permit / Class 2 (please present your printed application to the clerk).Requirements for Motorcycle Instruction Permit You must obtain a Class 2 license to operate a motorcycle or motor scooter.
